Timber Tectonics in the Digital Age prioritizes the ideas of community engagement, design build, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

This year both the Liminal Festival held in Lima, Peru as well as the downtown of Philomath, Oregon will hold the location of an ephemeral threshold on their respective intersections. To add temporary variety and interest to the paths of people at the Liminal festival in Lima and at 13th and Philomath Blvd in Oregon, we developed flower-like parts that evoke a sense of play and whimsy as peers and neighbors pass the threshold.

Project goals include the form of a Flower shape that expresses natural surrounding. This shape becomes a repeating module within the kit of parts that becomes scalable. Its scalability leads to the formation of panels and reduces plywood material waste. The structure is formed by this reciprocal frame model – as pieces agregate they stabilize. We have proposed both a half-lap connection as well as a snap lock connection.

Conceptually we were interested in how the threshold can evoke a sense of whimsy, a playful scale, and how people can feel within a meadow of flowers.
