Week 2: Flynn Casey

Wood joinery: Last week we worked on simple mortise & tenon joints in the woodshop. Because of the limited time, I chose to just draw it out and cut something crude on the bandsaw. I’m excited to spend some time in the shop on my own to experiment with some different kinds of joints.

Pre-cambered timber: In my studio I’ve been experimenting (in model scale and in rhino) with pre-cambering small-scale timber members to create bow shapes. Im interested to explore this technique in Grasshopper and Karamba and see how these shapes perform structurally. Most of the pre-cambered/tensioned timber I’ve seen have been large-scale glulam beams, tensioned with a steel rod or carbon fiber cable. I’m interested in how the same technique performs on a smaller scale.
