Team 1 “Portal-Frame” Timber Tectonics 2025

Hall Pavilion Vision Render

Concept and Execution

Our earliest concepts were interested in embodying the truss of the bridge through the roof form, thus allowing for unique play of pattern and structural form. Additionally, we explored ideas with an emphasis of recycling and reuse, taking complete members from a previous years project and designing structures with as little fabrication as possible.

Our final module acted as a “portal frame” of sorts that could be expanded to the side numerous times to create structure with unique connected bays.

Connections and Structure

ROOF RUNOFF:

  1. Apply roof pitch (2% minimum) for effective water shedding.
  2. Add overhangs and drip edges to protect walls and joints.
  3. Install waterproof membrane above plywood layers (e.g., EPDM or metal sheet).

SIDING ATTACHMENT:

  1. Design rainscreen cavity (10–20mm) for ventilation and drainage.
  2. Use stainless or galvanized fasteners for durability.
  3. Select prefinished or treated siding for enhanced weather resistance.

DRAINAGE METHODS:

  1. Ensure site grading directs water away from structure.
  2. Incorporate perimeter drains or gravel base for runoff control.
  3. Add gutters and downspouts to guide roof water safely.
  4. Maintain 150 mm clearance between cladding and ground.

END-GRAIN PROTECTION:

  1. Apply sealant or epoxy coating on all exposed end grains.
  2. Use metal or plastic caps on column tops and beam ends.
  3. Elevate columns with steel knife plate connectors to prevent ground wicking.
  4. Schedule routine inspections and resealing for long-term durability.

Site and Possibilities

Artistic rendition of what a site plan for the new Tualatin Community Park could look like including additional structures using this kit.

Just a few structural possibilites that this kit can make. The sky is the limit!
